Kendal’s Post Office has been saved from closure.
Its future was under threat when Post Office Ltd announced in November that it was among 115 directly-operated branches at risk of closure.
Over 2,800 people signed a petition launched by Tim Farron, Westmorland & Lonsdale MP, which called for the Stricklandgate branch to be protected.
Post Office Ltd has now said that although the branch won’t close, it will not be directly operated.
In a letter, it confirmed that it will be operated by aa franchise.
The letter said: “The branch will soon be operated by an independent franchise retail partner, ZCO Ltd, from the current premises, offering the same wide range of services, and extended opening on Tuesday mornings. We are finalising our plans, and we anticipate this change will happen by September.”
Mr Farron said: “I’m absolutely delighted that we’ve won our campaign to save Kendal Post Office.
“This is such an important resource for our town, so for it to be closed or shoved into the back of WH Smith would have been a disaster.
“I’m really grateful to everyone who back the campaign and signed the petition – it’s another victory for community campaigning!”
