
Hundreds of people have said their final farewell to a 20-year-old West Cumbrian man who died following a collision last month.
Cain Pears died after the incident in the early hours of May 26 on the A595 between Whitehaven to Workington.
The collision involved a red Ford Fiesta and Cain, a pedestrian.
Cain, of Ellerbeck Lane, Workington, played for Workington Reds for three seasons between 2021 and 2024. He scored 16 goals in 60 appearances for the football side.
His funeral was held this week and Workington Reds said: “Hundreds of people paid an emotional farewell to Cain on Wednesday at Our Lady and St Michael’s Church in Workington.
“The service was led by Canon John Watson before a packed church, followed by the committal at Distington Hall Crematorium.
“All at Workington AFC send condolences to Cain’s family and friends.”
After his death, his family paid tribute to a popular lad who had the world at his feet.
They said they were devastated by his sudden and tragic death.
In a statement, his family said: “Cain was such a popular lad and had the whole world at his feet and was carving out a wonderful future ahead of him.
“The world is a darker place without his smile and infectious laugh.
“Cain was a talented footballer and training to be quantity surveyor and loving it.
“He loved his friends, his girlfriend, and his family so dearly and we him.
“There are no words to describe the void he leaves behind as he truly touched so many lives for the good, sleep easy son xxx”
Cain’s family said they would like to give their sincere and heartfelt thanks and sympathies and compassion to emergency responders police paramedics and anyone who witnessed the scene.
