Coastguard call out after suspicious item found on West Cumbrian beach

Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team was called out after a member of the public found a suspicious object on a beach.

The team was called to Saltom Pit yesterday, Friday June 20.

Due to the object’s size, shape, and level of corrosion, there were concerns it could be unexploded ordnance.

The team said: “After a thorough assessment, we were able to confirm it was a badly rusted vehicle component, likely a shock absorber or hydraulic part.

“An abandoned and heavily corroded Volvo was found around 50 metres away, making it likely the item had come from that vehicle.

“We want to thank the member of the public who reported it, they absolutely did the right thing. It’s always better to be safe and let us take a look.”

If anyone comes across something unusual or potentially dangerous on the coast:

  •  Do not touch it
  •  Record the location — What3Words works well
  •  Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard
