An inquest into the death of a 19-year-old following a two-vehicle collision near Barrow has been opened and suspended after police made an arrest.
Officers were called at 1.34pm, on Friday June 6, to reports of a collision between an Audi S4 and a Volkswagen Up on the A5087 Coast Road at Rampside, near Barrow.
Timothy Paul Jolley, of Ulverston, died following the crash, and an inquest into his death was formally opened at Cockermouth Coroners’ Court this morning.
Barrow-born Mr Jolley was single at the time of his death and had been employed as a store assistant, noted assistant Cumbria coroner Margaret Taylor.
“He was a front seat passenger and the vehicle he was travelling in was struck by another vehicle from behind,” said Ms Taylor as she outlined brief circumstances given to the coroners’ office. “Despite the efforts of paramedics he died at the scene.”
A post mortem examination revealed that the cause of Mr Jolley’s death was a neck injury.
A number of directions had been made in the case. Police had been asked to provide evidence following the conclusion of an investigation, and the North West Ambulance Service asked to supply a patient report form. Mr Jolley’s doctor had also been asked to provide a factual statement.
A Cumbria police spokesman confirmed after the collision that the 20-year-old Audi driver, of Barrow, had been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving while over the prescribed limit of a specified drug.
“He was treated at Furness General Hospital before being questioned by police. He was released pending further investigations,” added the spokesman. “The family of Mr Jolley would like to thank members of the public at the scene who helped and gave first aid as well as all the emergency services staff who responded.”
The Volkswagen driver, a man in his late teens, was airlifted to hospital in Preston. He was said in the aftermath to be in a stable condition.
Police had asked any witnesses or people with relevant dashcam footage to come forward.
Ms Taylor confirmed that the inquest proceedings were being suspended as police continue to make enquiries following the collision.
