Workington Reds now has one club fewer to face to the NPL Premier League in the forthcoming season.
Widnes, last season’s NPL West champions, have resigned from the league, leaving 21 sides to contest the competition.
The Northern Premier League said today that a decision on relegation positions will be made by the FA Operations Committee for Steps 1-4, that has the sole decision making powers in this respect.
A league statement concluded: “The NPL’s commiserations and best wishes for the future go to Widnes FC chairman Ian Ross and his colleagues, the club’s volunteers and fans.”
Widnes believe they had not had enough support from Halton Borough Council in establishing a new home and that it had now become impossible to continue without that important backing.
The club has safeguarded their junior section, but the men’s team will not be playing in 2025/26.
