A second-hand bookshop is set to open in the Lake District, run by the National Trust.
The shop, in Hawkshead, will be the trust’s first ever standalone second-hand bookshop and is due to open on August 12.
Tabitha Twitchit’s Bookshop will open in the former Beatrix Potter Gallery, which closed in 2022 due to environmental challenges.
The gallery displayed a collection of items that the author left the National Trust, but in February 2023, the humidity levels in the building were identified as unsuitable for hanging artwork.
It will be run by a manager and a team of volunteers.
It is named after one of Potter’s beloved feline characters and the National Trust said it hoped it will be community hub and also host exhibitions and events.
Helen Dolan, property manager, said: “We’re incredibly proud to open Tabitha Twitchit’s Bookshop in Hawkshead – the first of its kind for the National Trust.
“It’s a celebration of stories, community, and the legacy of Beatrix Potter.
“We hope it becomes a much-loved space for locals and visitors alike to explore, connect, and be inspired.”
