Sunday’s meeting at Cartmel Racecourse saw local talent take centre stage as trainer Jimmy Moffatt and jockey Charlotte Jones thrilled the home crowd with memorable victories.
Cartmel’s own Moffatt, who trains at Pit Farm Stables, enjoyed a superb afternoon, saddling a double that has propelled him to joint leader in the fiercely contested Trainers Challenge.
Moffatt first struck with Bittalemon in the AW Blake Novices Hurdle, where local favourite Charlotte Jones guided the horse to an emphatic, unchallenged win.
The result was clear a long way from home, with the loudest cheers of the day greeting the Queen of Cartmel as she crossed the line.
Moffatt’s second success came later with Judicial Review in the Beckside Spa Retreat Handicap.
In a tight finish, the gelding stayed on strongly under a determined ride from Danny McMenamin to land the spoils close home. The double puts Moffatt level at the top of the Trainers Challenge standings on 17 points, alongside Mickey Bowen, as he eyes a seventh trainers’ title.
Charlotte’s win on Bittalemon takes her to eight points in the Jockeys Challenge, where she remains firmly in the hunt. A hugely popular figure at the course, Jones continues to enhance her reputation with every meeting.
Elsewhere, Danny McMenamin enjoyed a fine day with two winners, a second, and a third, moving him up to joint second in the jockeys’ table with 13 points.
His first victory came aboard the ever-popular Charlie Uberalles in the Oakmere Homes Handicap Chase, bringing the house down with a repeat of last year’s success
Racing at Cartmel resumes on Saturday July 19 and Monday July 21, when the racecourse hosts two days of National Hunt racing.
