Major flooding in Millom last month has prompted council bosses to take action.
The town was affected on June 21 and June 22.
Cumberland Council said following the flooding, it is now preparing to submit a business case to the Environment Agency for a flood alleviation scheme.
It said it hoped the agency would make a decision later this summer.
The authority said it thanked the Millom community for their positive engagement and co-operation during the difficult time.
It added: “Cumberland Council understands how distressing the threat of flooding can be and appreciate the community’s continued patience while long-term solutions are explored.”
The council said once funding decisions were confirmed, it would host a series of community drop-in events to share information and gather feedback.
Councillor Bob Kelly, Executive Member for environment and planning and elected member for Millom, said: “It is understandable that the community feels frustrated and angry about the ongoing flooding issues in Millom.
“I am, however, aware of the extensive work happening behind the scenes to ensure a robust and feasible business case can be put forward.
“We hope to share the outcomes of this work very soon and look forward to engaging with all stakeholders.
“In particular, I am hopeful that the dreadful situation faced by those affected by repeated flooding and effluent problems will soon come to an end.”
Cumberland Council said it remained committed to working closely with residents and partners to reduce the risk and impact of flooding in Millom.
