The first few hours of a police crackdown on dangerous drivers has resulted in several arrests.
Cumbria police is supporting the nationwide Fatal Four road safety campaign running during July called Operation Spotlight.
The operation targets the Fatal Four – speeding, using a mobile phone at the wheel, not wearing a seatbelt and driving under the influence of drink and/or drugs.
Operation Spotlight in April resulted in more than 150 arrests in the county.
Yesterday, police were called to a collision on the M6, north of Junction 44 yesterday, Tuesday July 1, at around 1.15pm.
One of the drivers involved was arrested on suspicion of drug driving, after failing a roadside test.
The driver, aged in his 30s and from the Liverpool area, was released under investigation while officers carry out enquiries.
Police also arrested a 21-year-old driver after stopping a car yesterday, July 1 at around 12.10pm on the A66 near Brough.
The driver was arrested after refusing to provide a roadside drugs wipe and has been charged with failing to co-operate with a preliminary test.
He was bailed to attend Carlisle Magistrates’ Court on August 4.
