A bid for 129 new homes in a Lake District town has been revealed by a Cumbrian developer.
Penrith-based Atkinson Homes wants to build the estate on land off Calvert Way in Keswick.
Its architects Green Swallow said it would include 87 affordable homes, 36 local needs homes and six houses to be occupied as an only or principal home and it was believed to one of the largest provisions of affordable houses schemes in the national park.
If approved, it would include two-bedroom apartments to five-bedroom homes.
It has lodged a planning application with the Lake District National Park Authority – and the developer said it had taken over five years to get to this stage.
The application said: “In summary from the public consultation it was recognised that there was a need for affordable housing in Keswick and a significant number of properties had become second homes or holiday homes. As such the resident population was reducing and the shortage of accommodation, particularly smaller dwellings, was becoming more apparent.”
The land is currently an agricultural field and United Utilities’ Thirlmere water pipe bisects the land.
Phase one of the development, lodged in 2014 development, saw 55 local occupancy homes built, with a mixture of affordable homes and open market properties. The new estate would be built to the east of the site.
The site has been identified as a development site within the Lake District National Park.
