People can find out more about the Cumbrian connections of a Victorian political powerhouse next week.
Spencer Compton Cavendish (1833 to 1908) was born, grew up and lived at Holker Hall in Cark-in-Cartmel.
To celebrate his birthday on July 23, the hall will host two talks about his life.
Known as the Marquess of Hartington and later the 8th Duke of Devonshire, he served in five cabinets and was a key player in the realignment of British politics during the Victorian era.
He held some of the most senior offices of state during his long political career, including Secretary of State for India, Chief Secretary for Ireland, Lord President of the Council, Leader of the House of Commons and Leader of the Liberal Party.
Uniquely in British political history, he was invited to become Prime Minister three times — and turned it down every time, choosing loyalty to his principles over personal ambition.
Holker Hall’s expert guides will be delivering short talks at noon and 2.30pm on Wednesday, July 23 in the hall as part of their History Bites series.
No booking is required and entry to the talks is included with admission to the hall and gardens on the day.
