Sign of the times for Carlisle fingerpost mix-up

Minor panic was caused at Cumberland Council after eagle-eyed passers-by spotted that a new fingerpost in Carlisle was incorrect.

The sign, part of the city’s redevelopment, appeared to be directing people in the wrong direction for attractions including the castle and Tullie.

People began to post pictures of the sign on social media yesterday.

Cumberland Council posted a response on its own social media pages.

It said: “The sign appeared to be directing tourists to completely random locations – we’re talking “Carlisle Castle? Oh, that’s over by the cheese area at M&S” levels of confusion. Naturally, we at the council had a minor panic. Cue dramatic music – “What have we done?!”

“Turns out, it was all part of the plan. The contractor had temporarily positioned the fingerposts in all directions to allow the concrete base to set properly.

“That’s right, they needed to balance the sign while the main post settled. This lasted for a very short time. And in that time – boom – the photo was taken, shared, and mildly went viral, eek!

“Rest assured; no tourists were misled, no one tried to board a train at the market, and Carlisle Castle remains firmly where it’s always been.

“All’s well that points well.

“Thanks for the laughs, the concern, and your ever-watchful eyes. The sign is now proudly pointing in all the correct directions. Crisis averted.”
