A Carlisle burglar caught on camera as he broke into a city business with an accomplice and stole cash has been sent to prison.
CCTV activated by motion sensors captured Grant Cleminson, 32, and his partner-in-crime at the front door of a gift shop at Denton Holme’s Atlas Works, on Nelson Street, at around 1am on July 7 this year.
The pair were seen drinking alcohol before causing damage to a door as they forced entry to the business before stealing £50 cash from a till during a 10-minute search.
Carlisle Magistrates’ Court heard today how the duo went back three hours later.
The CCTV footage showed they had, by that stage, changed clothes and tried to cover their faces before going on to the premises a second time.
Cleminson admitted burglary and had been, at that time, subject to a previously imposed suspended prison sentence he had been given for similar offending.
A defence solicitor told of Cleminson’s very troubled life and his ongoing battle with addiction.
Magistrates imposed a total immediate prison sentence of 46 weeks. Cleminson, of Charlotte Street, Carlisle, must also pay compensation — £50 towards the cash stolen and £100 for damage to the door.
- Cleminson’s co-accused had appeared at the court on a previous occasion and been given a suspended jail sentence for his role in the burglary.
