West Side Story will be coming to a stage near you later this year.

Following the success of their spring show, Annie, Workington Amateur Operatic Society is now preparing to bring a classic musical to the stage of the town’s Carnegie Theatre.

West Side Story is a retelling of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, with music written by legendary composer Leonard Bernstein.

Set in New York’s Manhattan in the 1950s, it follows star-crossed lovers Tony and Maria as their romance causes friction between rival gangs.

The tragic love story includes well-known hits such as Maria, Somewhere, America and I Feel Pretty.

Members of the principal cast include Sophie Mills as Maria and NODA award-nominee Andrew White as Tony, with NODA award-winner Jasmin Smith as the feisty Anita and Ryan O’Hagan as her husband and gang leader, Bernardo.

Liz Turnbull, society chair, said: “This will be only the second time that WAOS has performed West Side Story in its 119-year history.

” It’s still a much-loved show that brings together memorable music, a tear-jerking story, and energetic dance-numbers. We can’t wait to bring this amazing show to Workington once again.”

West Side Story runs for four nights from the October 15 to October 18.

Tickets are available from the Carnegie Theatre Box Office either online or by phone, 01900 602122.
