A Championship game was held up for over an hour yesterday while a former Whitehaven player was attended to on and off the field.
Jake Maizen, an Australian with international caps for Italy, had gone down in an innocuous looking tackle playing for Widnes at home to Doncaster.
After nearly 20 minutes of treatment on the field he was stretchered off with his head in a brace.
But referee Cameron Worsley took both sets of players off the field and there was no resumption of the game for over an hour.
It caused much speculation on Maizen’s condition and spectators were told that because of the doctor’s priorities with the injured player there would be no resumption until he was free.
It was eventually announced that Maizen was stable and that play would resume.
When they did restart Edene Gebbie, another former Whitehaven player, was red carded for the tackle on Maizen.
