
A man has been arrested after fleeing from police on a major Cumbrian road in an 130mph chase.
The 30-year-old driver was spotted on the A595 by officers over the weekend.
Cumbria police said: “He sped off from officers on the A595 at 130mph before crashing. He subsequently failed a roadside drug test and was arrested for driving offences including drug driving, dangerous driving, disqualified driving and aggravated vehicle taking.”
He was among several people were arrested over the weekend as part of Operation Spotlight, a police campaign to highlight the Fatal Four – the most dangerous behaviours on the road.
They are speeding, using a mobile phone at the wheel, not wearing a seatbelt and driving under the influence of drink and/or drugs.
Other arrests included a HGV driver spotted driving while on the phone who subsequently tested positive for cocaine, a man stopped at Hammonds Pond in Carlisle who failed a roadside drug test for cannabis and a man arrested for drink-driving after overturning his vehicle.
A 42-year-old Thursby man was charged with drink driving after failing a breath test yesterday July, 20. He will attend Workington Magistrates’ Court on August 12.
A 37-year-old woman from Newcastle, who was found at the wheel of a car facing the wrong direction by the side of the A66, was arrested for drink-driving after blowing more than double the drink-drive limit. She was subsequently charged with failing to provide a specimen for analysis and disqualified driving.
She will also attend Workington Magistrates’ Court on August 12.
