Four cows have been rescued after becoming stuck in quicksand.
The animals had broken through a gate overnight and entered the river near Newton Arlosh – and found themselves stuck up to their necks.
Firefighters were called today, Monday July 21, to the incident.
Crews from Carlisle East, Carlisle West and Wigton fire stations attended.
Carlisle East Fire Station said: “Our specialist animal rescue and swift water rescue trained crews worked tirelessly alongside the farmers, to safely rescue all four cows and return them to dry land.

“An udderly good ending for all, and thanks to the farmers for all their help including the use of their telehandler.”
