Workington Bus Station closes today for revamp

Workington Bus Station

Workington Bus Station will close today for several weeks for a major revamp.

The layout will be altered to improve safety, the building will be given a deep clean and it will be redecorated.

Travel firm Stagecoach said the layout change will mean buses will be able to reverse without having another vehicle behind and eliminate any reason for passengers to cross the bus station between moving buses.

The Murray Road facility was the first purpose-built covered bus station in Britain and opened in 1926.

It is closed from today, Monday July 21 and is due to reopen on September 1.

Where can I catch my bus while the bus station is closed?

Buses will not be able to use the bus station on Murray Road for around six weeks from Monday, July 21.

Bus services will continue to run but depart from stops on Oxford Street, Vulcans Lane or Jane Street.

The 51 service to Moorclose will depart from the westbound stop on Oxford Street, near the junction with Park Lane.

The X4/X5 to Keswick and Penrith, and the 30/300 towards Maryport and Carlisle, will use a temporary stop on Vulcans Lane.

The 29/29A/30 towards Whitehaven, Frizington and Thornhill, the 50 to Moorclose, 52 to Seaton and Harrington, and the 60 to Silloth and Skinburness, will leave from the Jane Street stop.
