Cumbria’s RAF Spadeadam has played a key role in an overseas NATO exercise.
Personnel from the base were recently deployed to Finland to support Exercise Atlantic Trident 2025 – which saw UK, USA and French and Finnish Air Forces train together to protect territory integrity.
The exercise aimed to demonstrate NATO’s strength and influence in the High North as well as Finland’s deepening integration into NATO.
RAF Spadeadam, supported by Landmarc, played a key role in the exercise, by simulating a real-world adversary through the deployment of realistic ground to air missile threats.
The participating aircrew then practiced evading the threats while completing their mission.
The exercise helps air forces improve operational integration and combat readiness among NATO allies.
Personnel used multiple bases throughout Finland and all involved air forces worked on each other’s aircrafts, performing minor maintenance tasks including aircraft refuelling – helping them practice rapid deployment and turnaround.
A spokesperson for the Cumbrian RAF base said: “RAF Spadeadam is the only Electronic Warfare Tactics Range in Europe, deployments such as this demonstrate the importance of the range and its personnel to the RAF and the UK commitment to NATO.”
