Workington earned their first win of pre-season when they beat Cleator Moor Celtic 3-0 last night at Birks Road.
It followed a defeat and two draws, and they still have three more friendlies to play before the season starts in earnest on August 9.
Not that results are the be all and end all of these pre-season games as manager Darren Edmondson gives game time to all of his squad members, looks at trialists and tries out different systems and permutations.
It’s all geared to being fit and fully prepared for the first NPL Premier Division test at home to Whitby Town.
Against a young, well-organised Celtic side the Reds dominated possession for long periods, knocked the ball around sweetly but perhaps should have done better with their finishing.
Tom Dawson and Kyle Nugent had the best opportunities in the first half but were off target from good positions.
Both Reds trialists were used in the first half and showed good touches in lively contributions, which will result in them both being in the squad again for Saturday’s trip to Heaton Stannington.

The opening goal came on 37 minutes and was a thundering strike from 25 yards by Will McGladdery. The former Holker Old Boys mid-fielder gave another impressive performance.
Reds were able to double their lead on 48 minutes with another powerful finish, this time by Steven Rigg and the third goal came near the end from the penalty spot. A Celtic defender was rather harshly penalised for hand ball but Rigg beat the diving Logan Carson to seal the win.

After Heaton Stannington away on Saturday, Reds visit Whitehaven on Tuesday, July 29 and complete their preparations on Saturday, August 2 at home to a Carlisle United youth side.
