Silloth’s military trail has been given a £4,500 boost by Cumberland Council.
The Fells and Solway panel, which channels the authority’s community investment, has given Silloth Tourism Action Group £4,568.
The money will be used to buy five information boards for a Military Trail. They will be placed at Grune Point, The Green, Causewayhead Cemetery, West Beach and Mawbray Banks, allowing visitors and locals to explore the area’s military history.
Panel chair Tony Markley said: “It is fantastic to be able to help bring history alive in the lovely town of Silloth.
“Many visitors may be unaware of its historical links so this is a great addition to the attractions of the town. One of the panel’s priorities is about pride in our local area and this project supports that admirably.”
Other awards in the latest round of investments from the Fells and Solway panel were:
- £4,500 to help Dalston Recreation Association replace fencing around a play area and football field.
- £3,000 to replace fencing at the Anthorn Community Association Play Area. Last year, a support group raised more than £30,000 for a new play area, and the new fencing will make it a secure and modern place to play.
- £4,500 to Wigton Youth Station to fit insulation and thermostatic radiator valves at their High Street headquarters. This will make the building cheaper to run as well as more comfortable and energy-efficient.
The application deadline for the next round of community panel support for the Fells and Solway area is August 19.
