It was the perfect finish to Danny Grainger’s reign as Workington manager – and the final game for defender Sam Smith.
For it was Smith, one of three senior players to announce his retirement, who headed the winner in the first minute of time added on.
He and both Conor Tinnion and Scott Allison are ending distinguished careers with the club, while Grainger is leaving after his second spell of two years in charge.
The Cumbrians had lost seven League games in a row before a fine 1-0 win in midweek over Carlisle United in the County Cup final.
Allison scored the winner, his 156th for the club to put him second top scorer in Workington’s history.
They followed up in front of 912 fans with an overdue but welcome and deserved victory over a Guiseley side which had fallen away from play-off hopes.
Smith had seen a shot cleared off the line midway through the first half but Workington, who had mainly forced the pace, went in front three minutes before half time.
Although a corner was headed clear Dav Symington put a cross back into the box where Stephen Rigg rose best to head home.
It was more even for a while in the second half and Guiseley eventually drew level on 72 minutes when Reece Kendall headed home from a corner.
The Workington winner came from the third successful header just when it looked as though the game was going to finish all square.
But in the 91st minute it was Smith who rose to meet a Symington cross and power home the winner – the perfect end to his Workington career notching his 26th goal for the club.
