A team from Cumbria is to enter a National veterans competition for the first time and at the same time support projects for young people in the county.
Allerdale Barbarians, who managed to send six players to the competition last season, are delighted to have secured a place at this year’s competition taking place in Surrey.
Chris Wright of Cockermouth Wasps says the squad is still looking for a few players and has been outlining how much it means for disabled and disadvantaged youth in Cumbria.
He said: “The money we raise don’t go into admin or working capital but solid, clearly defined projects in the Cumbrian region.
“Every penny we raise goes into these projects for the betterment of the less fortunate youth in our county. In recent times this has included £42,000 for a Sensory room for the Eden Valley Children’s Hospice at Carlisle; £14,000 for two modified sail boats for disabled sailors to enjoy Lake Windermere; £35,000 for a fully equipped minibus for Bendrigg Lodge Outdoors Centre; £28,000 for an Entertainment room for Friends of Kendal Deaf; and a Nurture Room for Flimby Primary School and Maryport.
“We are assessing a new project (a primary school) as we speak and hopefully I should be able to give you more information on that before the event.
“Wooden Spoon is all about a love of rugby, mates, and for having a good time – but rest assured all everyone’s efforts will be going towards improving the lives of the disadvantaged in our region.
“The Cumbria squad will be travelling to finish as high up the podium as possible and with our fund raising efforts included in the finish position we hope the brilliant Cumbrian community can get behind us.”
Wooden Spoon is the children’s charity of rugby and Vets Fest is being staged on Saturday, September 28 at Old Reigations RFC.
Last year’s event at Moseley Rugby Club in Birmingham, saw all the home nations represented by 28 teams from over 350 rugby clubs.
