[A] MOTORIST who tried to hoodwink police and his insurer after a road crash has been spared immediate prison.
Carlisle Crown Court heard how three crimes committed by 65-year-old Haydn Davies came to light after a collision near Penrith last July.
Davies’ Peugeot “smashed” at speed into the back of a Nissan Juke as traffic lights turned red at a roundabout. The Nissan, which was written off, contained a couple and two children who escaped serious injury.
Davies, of Howard Street, Penrith, fled the scene and later lied to his insurer that his vehicle was stolen before the incident. He then repeatedly misled police as they investigated.
But Davies left his number plate at the crash site and was later identified by the Nissan occupants. He admitted charges of careless driving, fraud and perverting the course of justice last month.
Today (THURS) he received a suspended six-month prison sentence, was placed under a year’s supervision and banned from driving for a year.
Recorder Ahmed Nadim, who heard of Davies’ health problems, concluded he had shown “sustained and persistent dishonesty”.
