Repair Café Returns to Penrith Old Fire Station

Penrith’s Repair Café Returns[A]fter the successful launch of the first Repair Café in April, Eden Arts will host the next event this month at Penrith Old Fire Station.

Cumbria’s first Repair Cafe saw items and household goods such as toasters, hoovers, furniture, computer screens, curtains, jumpers and even guitars, all of which were just minor repairs away from a fully functional piece of equipment. Their expert volunteers were on hand putting their skills and knowledge to the test to repair each of the items and sent the locals away with their newly restored goods –all for a donation. After a nice cup of tea and a good chinwag too of course!

Repair Café is a fantastic way to promote recycling and repair, adopting the motto – Bin it? No way!

People with the ability to fix things are actually closer to home than people think and are willing to volunteer their services to help the community. It’s too easy to just throw things away with cheap replacements on offer in local bargain stores, however if it’s a low cost solution people want, what better way to get their things fixed, learn how to fix them, and enjoy a social event at the same time. Repair café is a great opportunity to rejuvenate those shabby looking or faulty goods at no cost, and also meet other like-minded people from the local area who can show people how to fix it.

The next event on Saturday 24th June will see another chance to bring fixable items along to be repaired. Eden Arts do ask that if people are planning to come along, that they register what it is that needs fixed, which will maximise your repair chances. Experts in sewing, darning, woodwork, musical instruments and general household repairs will all be on hand during the day. People can register by visiting the Eden Arts website or telephoning Eden Arts.

The other side to this of course, is finding people who can fix things, so they need more people who are good with a screwdriver, a sewing machine or that know their way around technology, to be able to help out. They are especially looking for people who are handy with clothing, textile, bicycles, electrical appliances, furniture and wooden objects.
These expert volunteers can get in touch with Eden Arts via email, website or telephone. If you think there are other ways you can help out, Eden Arts would love to hear from you. Especially if you can assist hosting the event on the day and serving refreshments!

As well as providing the repair resource, there is also the importance of bringing people together in the community and the Repair café provides a really nice environment for locals, young and old, to meet up, sit and enjoy a nice cup of tea and share their know how and repair tips with others. It’s also actually really fun problem solving and seeing something come back to life which was once just taking up space in our homes.

Everyone is welcome and Eden Arts hope to see an even bigger turn out of people and volunteers. Eden Arts intend to host the Repair café every other month at the Old Fire Station, so come and join in!
