[D]irectors of Lakeland’s most historic and renowned event, the ‘Grasmere Sports’, are seeking a new organiser following the announcement that current Sports Manager, George Gale, is to step down. George, who has managed the event for more than nine years, will relinquish his role in 2018.
The successful applicant will take over responsibility for the trade stands for the year running up to the 2018 Sports, shadowing George, before assuming the full role as Sports Manager following the 2018 event. A part-time, salaried position, Grasmere Sports’ Chairman, Hal Bagot, expects healthy interest in the upcoming position:
“George has done a magnificent job as Sports Manager for the Grasmere Sports for all these years and will be a hard act to follow! We should like to thank him very much for his dedication to the role,” he said. “We are now seeking a new face; someone with great organisational skills and fresh ideas, to successfully drive the event into the future.”
The Grasmere Sports, traditionally held on the Sunday of the August Bank Holiday and taking place on 27th August this year, is steeped in history and welcomes in the region of 5000 visitors to the tiny village annually. Now in its 167th year, the event showcases the very best in Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling, hound trails, fell running for both adults and children, children’s sprint races and the ever-popular dog show. Its history and heritage place it as one of Cumbria’s most revered events, with competitors for the wrestling, travelling from as far away as Iceland and France, to attend.
