[P]OLICE investigating a report of a man having approached a child have established that no offence has taken place.

Cumbria Police received a report that a nine year-old girl had been approached by a man in a car in the area of Westfield View, close to the junction with Wedgwood Road, Flimby, at around 7.20pm on Monday night (26 June 2017).

Officers are satisfied they have identified the driver who has been interviewed voluntarily.

His innocent explanation for why he spoke with the child has been investigated and found to be supported by the evidence.

The matter is now closed and the family of the girl have been informed.

Sergeant Martin Hodgson said: “The child who made the report did the right thing. She was worried about the exchange and raised it with her mother who also did the right thing in contacting ourselves.

“This incident shows that we take such reports seriously. We have quickly traced the man in question and found his account to be reliable.

“We took the decision to make the public aware from an early stage whilst we were working to establish exactly what had happened due to the serious nature of the possible offence. We can now confirm there has been no offence.”
