Up to £200 available to set up market stalls as part of Whitehaven Big Birthday Bash

Elected Mayor of Copeland, Mike Starkie

[B]UDDING young entrepreneurs are being invited to apply for a chance to bag up to £200 to help them set up their stall at Whitehaven Market as part of its first anniversary celebrations.

A special ‘Big Birthday Bash’ themed market will take place on Saturday, September 30 featuring a selection of new stalls, entertainment and free goody bags, to mark the first anniversary of the market relaunch.

The £200 grant scheme offered by Copeland Borough Council is open to anyone aged 18 to 30 years old, and is in addition to the use of a stall at Whitehaven Market, worth around £100, for a six-week period – for free!

Local traders are also offering their mentoring skills as part of the package which will see new traders tap into the many years’ experience that some current stall holders have.

Mike Starkie, Mayor of Copeland, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone who’s looking to test the market with a new business venture.

“It gives people the chance to get out into the local community to test their products and interact with the many residents who attend our twice weekly market.

“We encourage anyone who’s interested in the scheme to get in touch.”

Whitehaven Market takes place every Thursday and Saturday and has been an increasing success since its relaunch in October 2016.

The number of regular stallholders has doubled since the relaunch and income for the council has increased by over 35 per cent.

Up to £50 of the grant must be used to purchase the relevant public liability insurance needed to operate a market stall, the other £150 should be used for setting up costs.

For more information and to get in touch email whitehavenmarket@copeland.gov.uk or call 01946 593014.
