[V]olunteers are being sought to form a new South Lakes Fundraising Group in support of Alzheimer’s Research UK, the UK’s leading dementia research charity.

The charity is looking for people with a range of skills to help set up the group, which will aim to raise vital funds and awareness across the region.

Members can get involved in a variety of ways, from getting stuck in to fundraising challenges to raise money for pioneering research to representing Alzheimer’s Research UK at events and spreading the word about the charity within their local communities.

Alzheimer’s Research UK regional groups play a crucial part in the fight against dementia, which currently affects around 850,000 people in the UK, including around 8,200 people in Cumbria.

A meeting is being held for anyone interested in forming and being part of an Alzheimer’s Research UK South Lakes Fundraising Group on Saturday 23 September, 10am, at the Langdale Chase Hotel, Ambleside Road, Windermere.

Alzheimer’s Research UK powers world class studies focusing on prevention, diagnosis and treatments for dementia with £3.5m going towards pioneering research projects in the North West. With the help of the South Lakes Fundraising Group the charity will be able to take a step closer to powering breakthroughs that will help future generations.

Gillian Edwards, Regional Fundraising Officer at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “Dementia has a huge impact on families and it’s important to us at Alzheimer’s Research UK that communities have the opportunity to come together and get involved with supporting dementia research.

“Regional fundraising groups are vital in helping us to defeat dementia, both through raising funds and helping to spread awareness of this cruel condition.

“Alzheimer’s Research UK’s vision is a world free from the fear, harm and heartbreak of dementia and our supporters are key to helping us bring about the first life-changing dementia treatment by 2025.

“We’re confident we’re going to find passionate and dedicated fundraisers in Cumbria with the same vision and we can’t wait to welcome them.

“As the county’s Regional Fundraising Officer, I’ll be on hand to provide support to the group as they kick-start their fundraising activities.”

If you would like to attend the meeting or would like more information about becoming an Alzheimer’s Research UK volunteer please contact Gillian on 07500 222 863 or email gillian.edwards@alzheimersresearchuk.org
