Rockcliffe footbridge before and after

[A] new footbridge has been opened in Rockcliffe; replacing the former Millennium Footbridge, which was washed away during Storm Desmond.

The new structure provides a crossing point for popular walks alongside the River Eden, and is more resilient than the previous structure to any future flooding events.

The new footbridge was installed by contractor Michael Stockdale, and re-opened on Monday 23 October.  The project was financed with funding from the Rural Payments Agency’s (RPA) ‘Rural Development Programme for England’ and managed by the council’s Countryside Access Team.

Councillor Celia Tibble, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: “I’m delighted this footbridge has been re-opened in Rockcliffe; it will re-connect the local community, and will be a valuable crossing point for walkers.  89 rights of way, footpaths and footbridges have been repaired or replaced following Storm Desmond so far, and the countryside team is continuing work to complete the remainder of the RPA funded works.”
