Carlisle driver arrested after leaving passenger, 20, critically injured in Dalston tree crash

[O]fficers investigating a serious road traffic collision between Cumdivock and Dalston, last night (8 Nov) have made an arrest this morning.

At around 10.50pm a Ford Mondeo collided with a tree and the driver left the scene.

The passenger, a 20-year-old man from Carlisle, suffered serious head and chest injuries.

He was taken to the Cumberland Infirmary, but is being transferred to RVI. He is described as being in a critical condition.

A spokesman for Cumbria Police said: “Officers have, this morning, located and arrested the man suspected of being the driver of the vehicle. He is a 22-year-old man from Carlisle.

“He has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, taking a vehicle without consent and failing to remain at the scene after an accident. He is currently in police custody.”

A spokesman for Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said: “At 23:05 firefighters were called to a one vehicle crash near to Gill Cottages, Dalston.

“Crews released one male casualty from the car using hydraulic cutting equipment and handed into the care of paramedics.”

Anyone who witnessed this collision and has yet to come forward, or who has information which may assist is urged to contact police referencing incident 215 of 7 November 2017.
