[A] Brampton man has been jailed for three years for inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

Steven James Gilbertson, aged 39, of St Martins Drive, Brampton, was sentenced today (8th December) at Carlisle Crown Court.

Gilbertson pleaded guilty to engaging in sexual communications with a child and cause/incite a child to engage in sexual activity at an earlier hearing.

Detective Sergeant Steve Whitehead, North Cumbria CID, said: “Steven Gilbertson is a dangerous and predatory man who met his victims online and groomed her for his sexual gratification. He was very manipulative and isolated his victims from her friends and family.

“Although he pleaded guilty to the offences, he has shown little remorse for his actions and stated no comment to all questions put before him in interviews.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the victims for their courage in assisting our investigation.

“I would like to take this opportunity to remind people to be vigilant when speaking with people online. There are people, like Gilbertson, who seek to exploit young people. It is also important for parents to make sure they know who their children are talking to online.”
