West Cumbria death crash driver appears in court

[A] West Cumbrian man has appeared in court accused of causing death by dangerous driving.

Shaun David Murphy, 29, appeared at North and West Cumbria Magistrates Court in Carlisle, he also faces an accusation of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

The fatal collision occurred on January 29, 2017 and took place on the A594 at Dovenby near Cockermouth.

Murphy of Dean Street, Workington was driving a black Ford Mondeo when he collided with a grey Nissan Micra driven by Terence Meddings, 67, from Cockermouth, he  died at the scene, the crash occurred at about 7.20pm, the road remained closed until 3.15am the next day while police investigated the accident scene.

A 17-year-old passenger in the Ford Mondeo and the driver Murphy, were taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries.

No pleas were taken today, the case will next be heard at Carlisle Crown Court on April 6, Murphy was granted unconditionally bail until then.
