University of Cumbria lends support to Sport Relief

Some of the runners who braved the weather to take part in the Talkin Tarn event for Sport Relief.

[W]hen BBC North West Tonight presenters Roger Johnson and Annabel Tiffin embark on a trek to the summit of England’s highest mountain this week, they’ll be making use of advice from the University of Cumbria’s head of medicine and sport Tim Barry.

The Sca Fell challenge, part of Sport Relief, begins at 7am on Wednesday March 19 at Wasdale Head Inn and will also see the presenters joined by three people who have experience of the charitable organisations that benefit from fundraising.

During a preview programme on Tuesday evening Tim has been invited to offer tips and guidance to the group who will be expertly led up the mountain.

The challenge follows an event held at Talkin Tarn Country Park near Carlisle on Saturday (March 17) where 91 runners registered for the Sport Relief Mile braving short, sharp blizzards and periods of brilliant sunshine.

“Thankfully the winds died down with an hour to go and although the race was scaled back to a 1 mile event from a choice of 1, 3 and 6 miles, the participants were happy to be escorted around the tarn in two groups, one a running group and one a walking group, which actually made the event even more convivial!” Mark Christie, senior lecturer in sport and physical activity. “The Mayor even walked around too and threw herself into the warm up routine with enthusiasm alongside the many families and adults taking part. The student event team did a fantastic job in the face of such adverse conditions!”

With the help of runners, Talkin Tarn staff, the Mayor of Carlisle, Slimming World (Carlisle), Cumbria Wildlife Trust and Multi-Sports Camps who supported the event, over £800 has been raised for Sport Relief.
