Peter O’Hagan

[T]his year’s Cumbria’s County Singles Championship saw semi-final qualifying take place at Carlisle’s Portland Snooker Club this week, with Workington’s Peter O’Hagan, Barrow’s Kyle Brown and Carlisle’s Mike Griffiths and Garry Carruthers  all making it through.

The prelims delivered some fine performances with Mike Griffiths defeating Workington’s Mark Tatton 4-2 and Peter O’Hagan beating last year’s semi-finalist in Carlisle’s Giles Finnegan, 4-0. Defending champion Kevin Basnett was tested however as stubborn Paul Vickers made the Workington cueist work for a 4-2 win.

Garry Carruthers

In round one Garry Carruthers came from 2-0 down to beat Flimby’s Kevin Kirkham 4-2 and Mike Griffiths made a day’s best break of 103 to take out Workington’s Stephen O’Hagan 4-2. Kyle Brown delivered a powerful display to move through to the last eight as with four 50 plus breaks he beat Carlisle’s Mally Lancaster 4-0. Quietly through went Peter O’Hagan with a 4-2 victory over Carlisle’s Idris Ramdin, however Paul Wright’s win over Mike Nixon cannot go without a mention as from 3-2 down he defeated the six time champion 4-3 to advance to the quarter-finals.

The quarter-final stage proved to be one game too far for Carlisle’s Wright and even though he went 3-2 up against Peter O’Hagan the Workington cueist delivered a fine comeback to complete a 4-3 qualifying victory. Barrow’s Brown maintained his fine form from the previous rounds and with another flurry of 50 plus breaks he defeated Kevin Basnett 4-1. Garry Carruthers went calmly about his business in winning 4-3 over Barrow’s Tom Millington and Mike Griffiths played through the pain barrier to defeat Carlisle’s Rob Woods 4-2 to make up a last four that will see the 60 year old championship trophy with a new name on it this year.

The semis and final will all be held at the Portland Club, Carlisle on Sunday 8th April starting at 2pm (final to start at approx 7pm).
