Sellafield

[A] COURT case brought against Sellafield Ltd has come before a judge.

Representatives of the company attended a hearing at Carlisle Crown Court this afternoon (THURS).

Sellafield is the subject of a prosecution brought by the Office for Nuclear Regulation under the Health and Safety at Work Act following an incident at the Seascale plant on February 5 last year.

It is alleged that a worker was exposed to plutonium.

Sellafield Ltd is alleged to have failed to ensure the health, safety and welfare at work of all its employees, including Jonathan Greggain, “in relation to the risks arising from hand working within glove boxes”.

No plea to the charge was entered today by the company, representatives of which were present in court.

A timetable for the progress of the case was set during a 20-minute hearing in front of Judge James Adkin.

A three-week trial was provisionally pencilled in for March next year.

Before then, a “pre-trial review” hearing will be held at the crown court in early November when plea to the allegation, of either guilty or not guilty, is due to be entered by the company after expert advice is taken.
