A man has died after falling from a bridge on the M6 near Carlisle.

Police were contacted at 11.23am today (10th September) in relation to the incident.

All three lanes of the M6 near junction 44 have reopened.

A Cumbria Police spokesman said: “Enquiries are ongoing to formally identify the deceased.

“It is believed he is approximately 50 and is of thin build. It is also believed he has links to the Motherwell and Manchester areas. Officers believe he may have used public transport recently to travel to Carlisle or may have hitched a lift.”

Officers are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident or have dashcam footage.

Anyone with any information is asked to email 101@cumbria.police.uk or call 101 and ask to speak to PC Alexander Johnson, quoting incident number 82 of the 10th September.
