Wigan Athletic 5 – 1 Penrith AFC Ladies

Penrith AFC Ladies returned to action after the festive break with a tough trip to Lancashire.

They welcomed Lily Gaulton and keeper Michelle Jones back into the squad while youngster Abbie Frizzle stepped up from the Development team.

Wigan started the game on the front foot and their sharp passing game forced pinned Penrith into their own half. But despite the pressure Wigan rarely threatened the Penrith goal and were restricted to long range efforts.

As the half progressed Penrith came more into the game as an attacking forced and went close to scoring on several occasions from set pieces through Sharina Robinson, Georgia Campbell and Charlotte Smith. However Penrith were to rue their missed chances when on 40 mins it was Wigan who took the lead from a curling free kick.

Ht 1-0

Penrith lost concentration for the first 10 mins of the 2nd half and frustratingly conceded 3 goals in that period as Wigan clinically took full advantage.

To their credit Penrith “steadied the ship” and pulled a goal back when the hard working Georgia Campbell poked the ball home from a free kick swung into the area.

Wigan had the final say in the game as they scored a 5th goal in the final minute.

Ft 5-1

This Sunday Penrith travel to face Stockport Blues in the League Cup while the Penrith Development entertain Fleetwood Town Reserves.

Penrith : Jones, Alderson, Han Fawkes, C.Smith, McCormick, Hea Fawkes(Buchanan), Nutter(Frizzle), Gaulton, Robinson, Hopton, Campbell.
