Gleeson Brings Opportunity to Cumbria

Gleeson Homes are continuing their expansion into Cumbria after a successful first year in the County.

Gleeson Homes are a national house builder that specialise in providing affordable homes to first time buyers. Eighty percent of their homes sold go to young, first time buyers from the local community. Gleeson helps young people out of housing poverty and the rent trap into home ownership.

Gleeson Homes commenced development on their first site for 100 homes at Briar Lea Park in Longtown in June 2018 and their second site for 58 homes at Sutherland Court in Barrow in November 2018. Their third site, for 166 homes at Moorside Place in Carlisle is due to start this month.

The company has a planning application in for 200 homes at Greymoorhill, Carlisle where they expect to be on site this summer with eight other sites coming forward, where the company expects to be on site over the next two years.

Sales Manager, Adrian Hilton based at the company’s Penrith office, said “our first two sites have exceeded our expectations and we’ve been selling houses before our show homes have been built, which is fantastic! We have had massive interest in our Moorside Place site at Carlisle so we are looking forward to getting started as soon as possible.”

Andy Patmore

Andy Patmore, Area Manager for Cu,bria said “We anticipate that we will have a turnover in excess of £25million a year within the next two yearsand this will mean more jobs for local people. We understand the importance of involving the community before and during the construction of developments, and leaving a legacy once their works are complete. A large part of the programme is giving priority of employment to people living within a 2 mile radius of each site and using local trades on their developments, working closely with subcontractors to help grow the company and share in our success. We are utilising local people to build on both our sites and this will be the same throughout Cumbria”

“We have opened a regional office in Cumbria which I don’t think any other national house builder has done and this reflects our ethos of employing local people and our commitment to building in Cumbria for the long term.”

Gleeson Homes run a successful Apprenticeship Scheme with future opportunities both on the company’s sites and at their Penrith office, for local young people looking to start a career in the construction industry.

Ryan, an Apprentice Quantity Surveyor in the company’s Penrith office lives locally in Armathwaite and started with Gleeson last September. Ryan said “I feel very fortunate to have secured a Quantity Surveying Apprenticeship with Gleeson, to have been given the opportunity to learn within the working environment within a few miles from my house. I am gaining knowledge and experience from other members of staff who work within different areas of the company. I am finding all aspects of QS work both interesting and enjoyable, and hope I can eventually succeed in becoming a fully qualified Quantity Surveyor and secure a future with Gleeson as they expand across Cumbria.”

The company is now taking applications for more local young people who are interested in the Gleeson Apprenticeship Scheme and ask that applicant visit the careers page on their website.
