RYA Push The Boat Out

There really is something for everyone as you and your friends and family, are invited to ‘Push The Boat Out’ and try sailing or windsurfing for free or low cost across Cumbria this May.

Seven venues are hosting Push The Boat Out (PTBO) open days and taster sessions around the county throughout the month:

  • Arnside Sailing Club 18 May 11.15am-1.15pm
  • Bassenthwaite Sailing Club 25 May 10am-4pm
  • Killington Sailing Association 05 May 11am-3pm
  • Royal Windermere Yacht Club 18 May 10am-3pm
  • South Windermere Sailing Club 18 May 10am-4pm
  • Ullswater Yacht Club 18 May 1pm-4pm
  • Windermere Outdoor Adventure Centre 17 May noon-5pm, 18 May 10.30am-5pm, 19 May 10.30-3.30pm

Getting active outdoors has been proven to positively impact physical and mental health. An escape from modern day life, getting out on-the-water is something the whole family can benefit from.

Enjoy the freedom of being afloat, the challenge and achievement of learning a new skill and the many new friends you will meet. Meanwhile, youngsters can develop heaps of positive life skills, like confidence, independence and teamwork, which they will take into all other areas of their lives..

RYA Programmes Manager, Michelle Gent commented: “We are delighted that for the second year running, Push the Boat Out will be returning for the whole of May. Open days are a fantastic day out for the whole family and a brilliant opportunity to have a go at some on-the-water activity. Many venues will also be organising tea, cake and barbecues so it’s a real opportunity to appreciate the club hospitality and get stuck in.

“Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned sailor looking for a way back in, there will be something for everyone – find out what’s going on in your local area and get involved.”

The national participation campaign run by the RYA aims to make the water more accessible, whatever your age, background or ability – getting more people sailing, windsurfing, having fun and getting active outdoors.

All kit and safety equipment is provided so just bring a pair of old trainers you don’t mind getting wet and your sense of fun. Refreshments will be also be available at many venues, with a host of shore-side activities and entertainment to enjoy too.

Last year, more than 39,000 people across the UK attended a PTBO open day, inspiring thousands of new sailors to join their local club.
