Theatre by the Lake is delighted to announce that Katie Posner has been nominated for the Best Director award at this year’s prestigious UK Theatre awards, for her production of My Mother Said I Never Should which is currently running at Theatre by the Lake.

My Mother Said I Never Should by Charlotte Keatley opened at TBTL on 23 May, and is one of the most popular Studio shows in recent years, receiving a glowing response from audiences and critics. A four star review in The Guardian described the production as ‘A wonderful gesture of empathy’ featuring ‘a superb ensemble’. The cast features Joëlle Brabban, Asha Kingsley, Maggie O’Brien and Emily Pithon.

The play weaves together the stories of four women from one family, joining each of them at pivotal moments in their lives as secrets, lies, and momentous decisions reverberate through the generations. Moving back and forth in time, we see their loves, expectations and choices, set against the huge social changes of the 20th century.

In its moving exploration of the relationships between mothers and daughters, and the consequences of breaking the most sacred vow of motherhood, My Mother Said I Never Should examines the choices we make which determine the course of our lives – and how it is never too late to change. It’s the most widely performed play ever written by a woman, having now been translated or produced in 31 countries from Japan to Peru since its premiere at Contact Theatre, Manchester, in 1987.

Katie Posner said: “I am deeply honoured to have received a nomination for Best Director at the UK Theatre Awards. My Mother Said I Never Should is an outstanding play which is continuously revered and celebrated all over the world. I am delighted to see it being recognized, once again, for its brilliance and for Theatre by the Lake for programming such an eclectic play.”

TBTL’s Artistic Director Liz Stevenson added: “We are so thrilled for Katie. Her beautiful production has gone down an absolute storm here at Theatre by the Lake – this nomination is much deserved.”

The UK Theatre Awards are an annual event which celebrate the outstanding achievements of regional and national theatre. The awards will take place at London’s historic Guildhall on Sunday 27 October. The nominations demonstrate the breadth and depth of talent and achievement in theatre and the performing arts throughout the United Kingdom, on and off stage.

My Mother Said I Never Should runs in the Studio at Theatre by the Lake until 31 October. There is a very limited number of tickets remaining; to book call the Box Office on 017687 74411 or online at www.theatrebythelake.com.
