Theatre by the Lake has a musically eclectic programme for audiences this autumn, from England’s North East coal mining heritage to Europe’s longest-established Taiko drumming group.
In their landmark 25th year, Mugenkyo – the UK’s original touring Taiko Tribe – return for a fourth time to TBTL’s Main House on Thursday 7 November at 7.30pm with a brand new show of skill, stamina and red-hot rhythms.
Taiko is an ancient Japanese form of percussion using large drums. One of taiko’s most defining aspects is its dynamic playing style: taiko playing is loud, hard, and fast, and involves a lot of choreographed movement which many identify with Japanese martial arts.
Mugenkyo are widely recognised as the ground-breaking pioneers of this exciting art-form. This year they celebrate the growth of their Tribe of performers from across the globe, with the latest captivating performance of sharp synchronisation, dramatic choreography and powerful rhythms on huge Taiko drums. Pushing the boundaries of the conventional, the drummers have been well-recognised for their collaborations in which they create new music with a variety of musicians of different genres. A visually and aurally enriching evening for all ages with one of the most innovative performing groups in Europe.

For something a bit closer to home, join The Pitmen Poets on Sunday 27 October at 7.30pm for a night of songs and stories woven with North East humour and humanity. With music, song and spoken word, these four poets sustain and celebrate the legacy of coal mining culture with favourites such as Billy Elliot, Close the Coalhouse Door, When the Boat Comes In, and, of course, The Pitmen Painters. Be enthralled and entertained by The Pitmen Poets: Billy Mitchell, Bob Fox, Benny Graham and Jez Lowe.
Both Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers and The Pitmen Poets have performed at TBTL previously, with incredibly enthusiastic receptions from audiences and sell-out performances.
