The waste management centre, approx 20m x 30m area of processed household waste inside an industrial unit was well alight on arrival.

Six fire engines, a water bowser, wildfire unit and an aerial ladder platform from Carlisle West, Carlisle East, Lazonby, Penrith, Brampton, Wigton, Appleby and a Welfare Support Unit from Cockermouth extinguished the fire using a ground monitor, hand held jet and main jet.

Approx 40, mostly on call firefighters were involved tackling the blaze.

A Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “There were no injuries and no damage to residential property, the commercial building has been mostly destroyed.

“The fire is not being treated as suspicious.

“Crews are still on scene damping down.”
