BRINGING the student experience to life has been a unique challenge for those at Lakes College.

But thanks to a Virtual Discovery Week which begins on Monday (May 18th), those considering signing up to start at the Lillyhall-based college can see first-hand what it has to offer.

The interactive week will be crammed with everything from virtual tours to live question and answer sessions with careers experts.

A total of 23 staff members will appear in videos which focus on their individual areas.

Principal Chris Nattress

Principal Chris Nattress, who will kick-off the week on Monday morning, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for prospective students to find out what we offer at Lakes College.

“It will focus on the facilities, the interesting courses available and what support is on hand.

“It’s slightly unusual because of the situation with Covid-19 – however this is a great opportunity for people to find out more about the opportunities that we have here at the college, the amazing facilities we have, and to speak to our expert staff about the best options for you.”

The online tour will promote the top of the range facilities, including the 3G sports pitch, the student-led restaurant Graduates, hair and beauty salons, the Construction Skills Centre and the National College for Nuclear building.

Cath Wilson, recruitment and admissions leader, said: “Here at Lakes College we wanted to show the great range of opportunities that we have available. We decided to organise a virtual week, where our prospective students can find out more about what courses we have available and also meet staff from various departments.

“We understand that a lot of current Year 11s will also need some help in deciding what to do next, here at Lakes we are a community college, who are dedicated to helping and advising young people in order for them to make decisions about their future.

“We really do have something for everyone and are happy to help anyone interested in starting a course in September during this difficult and uncertain time.”

Aidan Blackett, who works in the marketing and PR department, has the challenging task of editing dozens of videos while working from home and creating an online virtual tour.

He said: “In the past we’ve hosted events where prospective students can see the college facilities first-hand and chat to the course lecturers.

“Our aim with the Discovery Week is to mirror this through the use of videos and technology – just because you can’t visit the college in person, we’ll bring it to you.”

The Virtual Discovery Week runs from Monday, May 18th to Friday, May 22nd. The event will mainly be running through the college’s Facebook page – search for Lakes College – as well as the website www.lcwc.ac.uk
