Teenager admits heroin supply crime committed near Carlisle

Carlisle Crown Court

A TEENAGER has admitted a heroin supply crime which was uncovered after he was stopped in a speeding car on the M6 near Carlisle.

Kaya Emile Preston, 18, was a passenger in a northbound vehicle which was pulled over by police on July 7 this year.

Sixteen wraps of heroin were found stashed in a pair of black gloves. The total value of the drug haul was estimated to be almost £1,300 although magistrates heard when Preston was first brought to court that the substance could be worth even more if divided into smaller quantities.

“Police believe this is not a small fry operation,” prosecutor John Moran had told the Bench.

When he appeared at Carlisle Crown Court this morning (TUES), Preston – a teen of previous good character – admitted possessing heroin with intent to supply. However, Judge Nicholas Barker noted Preston had pleaded guilty on the basis that he believed he was actually in possession of class B cannabis and was making the journey to discharge a cannabis debt to a dealer.

The case was adjourned for the prosecution to discuss that basis of plea with police investigators.

If it is accepted, Preston is due to be sentenced on September 29. If not, evidence will be presented during an additional hearing in front of a judge who would then determine the extent of the teen’s offending.

In the meantime, Preston, of Orlando Close, Prenton, Wirral, was remanded in custody by Judge Barker.
