Thousands of trees will be planted near Carlisle’s Tesco store as the supermarket chain bids to help the environment.
A total of 4,000 trees will be planted to the south east of the Tesco store, between it and the A69.
The firm said once established, the woodland would play a part in reducing the impact of the A69 by improving visual amenity, has the potential to reduce surface water run-off in the long-term, would enhance habitats for protected priority species like otters and birds including barn owls.
It added that each year, the woodland would improve local air quality by removing up to 100kg of pollution elements, while removing up to 3,250kg of carbon from the atmosphere, storing up to 90 tonnes of carbon over 60 years.
Philip Pearson, store manager, said: “It’s been great to see these trees being planted outside the store and I think it will not only improve the green space around the store but hopefully have a positive impact on the local community and our environment for years to come.”
The company aims to plant 11,000 trees at UK stores in the first three months of this year.
