The A66 is currently closed both ways to high sided vehicles between the A685 at Brough and the A67 at Bowes.
Weather warnings are in place for most of the country for today.
The Met Office said gusts of 50-55mph are possible inland and gusts may reach 60-70mph on coasts and hills, especially in the west, before gradually easing this afternoon.
