A South Lakes charity has committed to spending about £30,000 on community projects in the next 12 months to support its local village out of lockdown.
Cartmel Village Society (CVS) exists to preserve and celebrate the history of Cartmel village, making sure it’s a vibrant place to live, work and visit. In the last 10 years, the charity has allocated more than £125,000 to support village projects.
Upcoming projects being supported will include refurbishing the ancient fish slabs in the village square. A special piece of Cartmel’s history, the old granite slabs signify the spot where, hundreds of years ago, the daily catch from Morecambe Bay would be laid out for villagers.
There are also plans to contribute to the rebuild of the public toilets and erect a new cycle rack. CVS will also continue to support local schools with IT requirements including subscriptions to online learning tools to enhance pupils’ development.
A new website Cartmel.org has been launched hosting a mix of fascinating history and heritage content plus modern-day maps and resources, and a social media campaign aims to encourage people back into the village to support local businesses and the community.
Mike Gibbons, chairman and trustee of Cartmel Village Society, said: “As lockdown is ending and businesses are once again able to reopen, it’s an ideal time for CVS to reinforce its commitment to working with partners to improve Cartmel’s public spaces for the benefit of everyone.
“Spring is a time for new beginnings and, not only do we have a new website covering a range of things to see and do in the area, but we’re also developing new partnerships with local Cartmel businesses to plan future events to ensure Cartmel remains a vibrant place to visit. Watch this space.”
To mark the launch of the new website, Cartmel Village Society is giving people the chance to win a meal for two courtesy of Simon Rogan at home, which also includes free UK mainland delivery (with some limited postcode restrictions).
