Injured mountain rescuer Chris Lewis moves to spinal unit

Seriously injured mountain rescue volunteer Chris Lewis has been moved to a specialist spinal rehabilitation hospital as he continues his long recovery from life-changing injuries.

The 60-year-old fell 150 metres while making his way to assist a camper on Red Screes above Kirkstone Pass on February 6.

The Patterdale mountain rescue team volunteer has spent much of the time since in intensive care while a fundraising campaign on his behalf has now topped the £1million mark.

Mr Lewis is still not well enough to receive visitors but team member Mike Blakey revealed his stricken colleague had been transferred from Preston Hospital to Southport Hospital, north west England’s regional specialist spinal rehabilitation centre.

Writing in a newsletter to the group’s supporters Mr Blakey said: “Chris had been in intensive care for much of the last two months so this move is a positive step forward.

“He is currently under assessment so that a treatment plan can be developed.

“Sadly, Chris is unable to have visitors but he has virtual daily contact with a team member and his wife.”

Mr Blakey said he had been blown away by the public’s response following the incident with more than 38,000 supporters donating to his JustGiving page.

“The cost of care for Chris over the long-term will be significant and every penny raised will be needed to provide for him,” he said.

“I’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone who helped raise money or donate.”
