Two Carlisle politicians have backed the city’s bid to the Government’s Levelling Up Fund.
The bid, which has outlined a case for investment in Tullie House, will target two significant areas, providing support to the city centre and improving the cultural offer in Carlisle.
Tullie House is part of the historical and cultural quarter of the city and the bid significantly supports both of these aspirations.
“Investment in Tullie House will without a shadow of a doubt, have an impact on improving the attraction and vitality of the city centre, both for the local population and tourists visiting Carlisle,” said Carlisle MP, John Stevenson.
John Mallinson, leader of Carlisle City Council added: “This is a really great example of our local MP John Stevenson working together with Carlisle City Council for the good of Carlisle.
“We were delighted to support this bid to Government and will be putting in £1.5m of match funding to help bring this project at Tullie House to fruition.”
“The proposed investment will create job opportunities in the vicinity and have a positive impact on the local economy, the city centre and the visitor experience to Carlisle.
“Tullie House has already been recognised by Government as a very important regional museum and arts centre. Its reach goes well beyond Carlisle being a regional attraction and indeed national destination for events and visitors.
“Sadly, the cultural offer in this part of the country has been somewhat limited, and therefore this crucial investment in Tullie House will address that imbalance and improve the cultural offer of Carlisle.
“Levelling up is all about improving our facilities and reaching our aspirations. The proposed improvements of Tullie House offers a very powerful statement that cultural opportunities do matter to the city and wider region.”
